TRIPOLI, Aug. 30 — Libyan Prime Minister Abdul-Hamed Dbeibah on Wednesday stressed the need to hold general elections in the country as soon as possible. Dbeibah made the remarks during a meeting with the Special Envoy of the French President for Libya Paul Soller in the Libyan capital of Tripoli, where they also discussed political developments in Libya and neighboring countries, said a statement issued by the government’s information office. Dbeibah stressed the need to hold elections as soon as possible in accordance with fair and impartial laws to end the transitional stages in Libya. The French envoy expressed his country’s support for the Government of National Unity and its efforts in pushing for the elections, it added. Soller on Tuesday met with President of Libya Presidency Council Mohamed Menfi, discussing elections, uniting the military institutions, and achieving national reconciliation in Libya. Libya failed to hold general elections in December 2021 as previously scheduled, due to disagreements over election laws among the Libyan parties. Ever since the fall of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011, Libya has been struggling to make a democratic transition amid escalating violence and political division.
