In response to President Duma Boko’s declaration of a State of Public Health Emergency, the Botswana Presidency, through the Botswana Development Corporation (BDC), has announced a significant initiative aimed at bolstering the country’s healthcare system. The newly established Unity Healthcare Botswana Partnership Fund I (UHBP I) marks a transformative step towards securing Botswana’s healthcare supplies and enhancing public-private collaboration.
With a target size of BWP 5 billion, UHBP I is designed to tackle urgent healthcare challenges by ensuring reliable access to essential medicines for chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and HIV. The fund’s comprehensive approach goes beyond procurement, focusing on strengthening supply chains, improving procurement efficiency, and fostering sustainable local manufacturing. This integrated strategy is set to generate both social and economic value, reaffirming the government’s commitment to improving the health and dignity of its citizens.
UHBP I is structured as an en commandite partnership, with the Botswana Development Corporation providing the initial seed capital of BWP 100 million, representing 2% of the total target. The fund is designed with a 15-year term and aims to achieve a first close of BWP 2.5 billion by September 2025. It invites participation from both domestic and international investors interested in secure, high-impact co-investment opportunities.
Supported by Botswana’s investment-grade sovereign credit rating, UHBP I offers a resilient investment platform that aligns social impact with commercial returns. By bringing together investor interests and national health priorities, the fund is poised to play a vital role in delivering life-saving healthcare solutions and strengthening Botswana’s health security for years to come.
