Kenya wants more Chinese investment in its textile sector

NAIROBI, April 14 — Kenya is stepping up efforts to attract Chinese investors into its growing textile and garment sector to create more jobs, a government official said on Friday. Kenya wants to leverage China’s advanced manufacturing capabilities to boost its industrial sector, Abubakar Hassan Abubakar, principal secretary at the Ministry of Investments, Trade and Industry, said in Nairobi, the capital. “Kenya offers Chinese investors incentives such as tax holidays in the export processing zones and special economic zones,” Abubakar told a trade delegation from China Ningbo Textile and Garment Manufacturers Association. The delegation is in Kenya on a four-day visit, which ends Saturday. Abubakar noted that Kenya is an ideal destination for foreign investors keen on accessing markets on preferential terms in Africa, Europe, and the United States. Chen Guofang, secretary-general of the Ningbo Textile and Garment Manufacturers Association, said Kenya is an attractive investment destination because of its strategic location as well as its highly skilled labor force. Chinese manufacturers can play a role in transforming Kenya into a hub for textile and apparel production in Africa, Chen said.
