Hospitals in Ethiopia’s Tigray resume operations as supplies arrive: United Nations

UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 16 — With more medicine and medical equipment enroute to Ethiopia’s Tigray region, many hospitals impacted by recent hostilities and shortage of supplies are resuming operations, UN humanitarians said on Thursday.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said the restoration of medical services includes Ayder Hospital in the regional capital, Mekelle. OCHA said the world body and its humanitarian partners continue to bring more food, nutrition, health and other essential supplies to the Tigray region and to deliver aid across most areas of the neighboring Afar and Amhara regions. However, significant gaps remain. The office said security conditions remain volatile in parts of the Amhara region and in northern Afar and Tigray, posing risks to civilians and civilian infrastructure and complicating assistance delivery. Humanitarian partners are assessing the impact on civilians and their humanitarian needs.

“The UN calls for the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure and the facilitation of safe, rapid and unhindered access for humanitarian assistance,” OCHA said.
