Gomes lifts Atletico Mineiro over Palmeiras

RIO DE JANEIRO, July 27 — Igor Gomes struck late as Atletico Mineiro edged to a 2-1 away win over leader Palmeiras in Brazil’s Serie A on Sunday.

The visitors opened the scoring after Carlos Miguel fumbled a routine save from Mateo Cassierra’s long-range attempt, allowing Victor Hugo to fire in the rebound. Palmeiras equalized when Felipe Anderson’s low shot took a deflection before beating goalkeeper Everson at his near post. Gomes restored Atletico’s lead by rifling a shot into the far corner after Alan Minda’s pass on the counterattack. Atletico is now eighth in the 20-team standings with 28 points, 16 behind Palmeiras. In Rio de Janeiro, Jonathan Calleri scored in the 70th minute to cancel out Leo Pereira’s opener as Sao Paulo earned a 1-1 draw with Flamengo. In Belo Horizonte, Gabriel Justino’s first-half goal handed Botafogo a 1-0 win over Cruzeiro. Elsewhere in Brazil’s top flight on Sunday, Remo won 2-0 at home to Vitoria, Gremio was held to a 1-1 home draw by Fluminense, Bragantino was held to a goalless home draw by Coritiba, and Bahia drew 1-1 at home to Corinthians.
