ACCRA, June 12 — Jordan Ayew, captain for Ghana’s male senior football national team, the Black Stars, has vowed the team will make the country proud at the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite their tricky group.
Speaking at a send-off event before the team departed from Alexandria, Virginia, for Rhode Island, the United States, Ayew said the squad is motivated to pick up valuable points in their Group L games. Despite coming up against formidable opponents, including Panama, England and Croatia at the group stages in the World Cup, he expressed that the team would come through. “We have three massive games for us, and we want to make you guys proud; we want to make Ghana proud,” said the Leicester City forward. He admitted the task ahead of them in the World Cup would be daunting but expressed optimism they would succeed with the support of Ghanaians. “Obviously, it’s not going to be easy, but with your prayers and support, hopefully, we’ll be successful,” added the Ghana captain. Ghana arrived in Providence, Rhode Island, in the evening for the final phase of preparations ahead of their FIFA World Cup campaign.
Head coach Carlos Queiroz and his squad, according to the Ghana Football Association (GFA), are expected to resume training on Friday to fine-tune preparations ahead of their opening game. The West African country is making their fifth appearance at the FIFA World Cup, having participated in the 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2022 editions of the tournament. The country’s best performance was at the quarterfinal stage of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Ghana opens its World Cup campaign against Panama in Toronto on Wednesday, June 17, before taking on England and Croatia.
