Four killed by powerful wave on Spain’s Tenerife, one missing

MADRID, Dec. 9 — Four people have died and another is missing after being swept out to sea by a powerful wave on the Spanish Island of Tenerife, local authorities said on Monday. The incident occurred shortly after 4 p.m. local time on Sunday at a natural rock swimming pool in an area known as “Los Gigantes” on the island’s south coast. A large wave struck the area, sweeping several people into the ocean. Three people were confirmed dead on Sunday, emergency services said. They were identified by local media as a 35-year-old man, a 55-year-old woman, and another man of unconfirmed age. A fourth victim, a woman who was rescued and hospitalized, died on Monday morning, Emiliano Navarro, the mayor of Santiago de Teide, told Spanish state broadcaster RTVE. A fifth person remains missing while search operations are ongoing, authorities said.
