Former Barcelona youngster Ilaix Moriba joins Getafe on loan

MADRID, Jan. 9 — Spanish La Liga side Getafe announced on Monday that it has sealed a loan deal for former FC Barcelona midfielder Ilaix Moriba for the second half of the season. The move reunites the 20-year-old with Getafe coach Jose Bordalas, who he had as his boss in a loan spell with Valencia two seasons ago. Moriba played 18 games for Barcelona as a teenager and looked to be set for a successful future at the Camp Nou, but opted not to sign a new contract and instead penned a deal with German side RB Leipzig. However, he has only made six appearances with Leipzig, with the club opting to send him on loan to Valencia in the second half of the 2021-22 season and also for last season. He returned to Germany last summer, but has not played at all this season and has now opted to spend the second half of the campaign with Getafe. The midfielder is currently preparing to compete in the Africa Cup of Nations with Guinea and will join up with Getafe after competing in Cote d’Ivoire.
