Ex-Brazil defender David Luiz leaves Fortaleza

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 2 — Veteran defender David Luiz has parted ways with Fortaleza after less than seven months with the Brazilian Serie A club. The 38-year-old former Brazil international center-back bid farewell to teammates and Fortaleza staff on Friday after his contract was terminated by mutual consent, according to widespread media reports. Globo Esporte reported that he has agreed in principle to a three-year deal with Pafos FC in Cyprus’ topflight. Luiz made just 16 appearances across all competitions for Fortaleza following his arrival on a free transfer in January. He had been contracted to the club until December 2026 with an option of a 12-month extension. Capped 57 times for Brazil’s national team, Luiz’s career has included spells at Benfica, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, Arsenal and Flamengo, among other clubs.
