EU ambassadors visit Khartoum for 1st time since Sudan conflict outbreak

KHARTOUM, June 16 — Chairman of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereign Council, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, on Monday received a delegation of European Union (EU) ambassadors accredited to Sudan, who paid their first visit to Khartoum since the outbreak of war in the country in April 2023.

In a statement, the council said that Al-Burhan briefed the ambassadors on the latest humanitarian and security developments in the country and referred to what he described as violations committed against civilians by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), stressing the need to halt external support provided to the group. Al-Burhan also emphasized that the political process is a “purely Sudanese matter” that should take place within Sudan and be driven by the will of the Sudanese people, welcoming any international support that contributes to stability, peace, and development while respecting the country’s sovereignty, said the statement. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, EU Ambassador to Sudan Wolfram Vetter said the visit reflects the EU’s readiness to engage with Sudanese stakeholders to help find a way out of the crisis and support an independent democratic civilian transition in Sudan. Vetter noted that the EU delegation held meetings with Sudanese officials, United Nations agencies and organizations, and diplomatic missions in Khartoum, reaffirming the EU’s “commitment to supporting Sudan’s unity, territorial integrity and sovereignty.” Since mid-April 2023, the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF have been engaged in a war that has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions of people inside Sudan and abroad, according to international estimates.
