ADDIS ABABA, Oct. 6 — Ethiopia’s long-serving Finance Minister Ahmed Shide has been appointed as Speaker of the Ethiopian House of Peoples’ Representatives (HoPR), the lower chamber of the parliament. The appointment took place on Monday during the seventh HoPR tenure, following the country’s seventh general election held on June 1, 2026. The HoPR formally established the country’s new federal government on Monday, as the ruling Prosperity Party appointed incumbent Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed for another term in office. Shide, who has served as Ethiopia’s minister of finance since October 2018, will assume the new role for the next five years, succeeding Tagesse Chafo. Shide has been playing a central role in the country’s economic reform programs, including the shift toward a market-based foreign exchange system and negotiations on external debt restructuring.
