Empowering a Generation: Celebrating Commonwealth Youth’s Pivotal Role in Building a Fairer and Better World

Windhoek, Aug 14 — As the world marks International Youth Day 2025, the Commonwealth is shining a spotlight on the extraordinary contributions of its young people the visionaries, leaders, and changemakers driving progress toward a more just and sustainable future. From 4-8 August, Windhoek, Namibia, became the vibrant epicenter for youth leadership as over 200 youth leaders gathered for the inaugural Commonwealth Youth Leadership Consultative Dialogue. Hosted by Namibia’s Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture, the Hon Sanet Steenkamp, the event underscored the vital role youth play in shaping policies and mobilising action aligned with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Marking a decade since the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Dialogue convened policymakers, young leaders, and stakeholders from across 56 Commonwealth nations. Their mission: to reimagine youth leadership and develop forward-looking strategies that reflect lived realities and empower the next generation to lead with purpose, innovation, and resilience. As Minister Steenkamp affirmed, this Dialogue is a catalyst for meaningful relationships and tangible policy shifts, heralding a Windhoek Declaration rooted in youth-driven aspirations.

Joshua Opey, Chair of the Commonwealth Youth Council, passionately called for increased support to youth organizations, highlighting the urgent need to tackle rising unemployment, mental health crises, and climate change challenges. The Council continues to represent over 1.6 billion young people across the Commonwealth, amplifying their voices and ensuring their involvement as essential partners in global progress.

The celebrations continue throughout August with diverse engagements, including a pre summit webinar preceding the Model Commonwealth Summit in Ghana, the digital Commonwealth Youth Spotlight showcasing inspirational youth awardees, and the Secretariat’s participation in the official United Nations International Youth Day observance in Nairobi. Additionally, the London Youth Art Health Summit will convene young creatives and advocates to explore the nexus between arts and wellbeing.

Layne Robinson, Head of Social Policy Development at the Commonwealth Secretariat, encapsulated the Commonwealth’s enduring commitment, noting, “For over half a century, the Commonwealth Youth Programme has energized, uplifted, and amplified youth voices, recognizing them as innovators, advocates, and leaders. Investing in young people is investing in the future.” With over 60% of the Commonwealth’s 2.7 billion population under 30, the organisation’s ongoing dedication to empowering youth is not just a commitment it’s a transformative force propelling efforts to eradicate poverty, protect the planet, and promote peace and prosperity.

This International Youth Day, the Commonwealth proudly celebrates its young trailblazers already leading the charge toward a better, fairer world, today and for generations to come.
