Cote d’Ivoire to build 12,000 social housing units for displaced residents

ABIDJAN, July 2 — Ivorian Minister of Communication and government spokesperson Amadou Coulibaly announced on Wednesday that the government will build 12,000 social housing units to accommodate people displaced by eviction operations.

“The government has identified two relocation sites to host a large-scale program for the construction of 12,000 social housing units. The first site is located in Songon, while the second is along the Northern Highway,” Coulibaly said in Abidjan. The minister said the housing units, which will be offered at affordable rents, will eventually provide accommodation for nearly 60,000 people affected by these operations. Ivorian authorities have carried out a series of eviction operations, particularly in Abidjan, as part of efforts to reorganize urban spaces and secure areas exposed to risks during periods of heavy rainfall.
