Cameroonian army kills 5 terrorists in southwest region

YAOUNDE, Aug. 6 — The Cameroonian army said on Wednesday it had killed five terrorists in the country’s Southwest Region.

Army spokesperson Cyrille Serge Atonfack Guemo said in a statement that the raid took place on July 17 in the villages of Batanga and Asaka in the Akwaya subdivision near the Nigerian border. Guemo said the aim was to “neutralize dangerous terrorists” who were allegedly planning attacks in the region, including targeting fixed communication infrastructure. He added that several pieces of weapons were recovered during the operation. The spokesperson did not identify the group involved. Separatist fighters seeking independence for Cameroon’s English-speaking regions have been active in that area.

Guemo also rejected reports that civilians were killed, calling them “distorted information” spread by propaganda networks to undermine troop morale. He said that security operations were continuing across the area to eliminate remaining elements and ensure the safety of civilians.
