Cameroon kick off AFCON qualifiers with narrow win over Namibia

YAOUNDE, Sept. 9– Cameroon began their qualifying campaign for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Saturday with a 1-0 victory over Namibia. In front of nearly 25,000 spectators at the Roumde Adjia Stadium in northern town of Garoua, the Indomitable Lions missed several scoring opportunities, before finally finding the net in the 65th minute through captain Vincent Aboubakar. “We were the better team, we played better. I don’t want to talk about the refereeing, but I think we have to do things well,” rued Namibia coach Collin Benjamin afterwards. “We are glad to win. It was a good match,” said Cameroon coach Marc Brys. Cameroon and Namibia are in Group J, which also includes Kenya and Zimbabwe. Cameroon will now face Zimbabwe on Tuesday in Uganda. The 2025 AFCON takes place in Morocco from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.
