Botswana’s general election results expected Friday afternoon

GABORONE, Oct. 31 — Botswana’s Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) announced Thursday that vote counting for the general election has begun, with final results expected by Friday afternoon. According to IEC, polling stations closed as scheduled at 7:00 p.m. local time on Wednesday, with fewer than five stations remaining open until 10:00 p.m. local time. Vote verification and counting began Thursday morning, with final results for local councilor positions expected by Friday morning, and parliamentary results anticipated in the afternoon. Under Botswana’s electoral law, the polling will determine 61 National Assembly seats and 609 local councilor positions, with the party securing at least 31 parliamentary seats declared the winner. IEC Chairperson Barnabas Nyamadzabo highlighted a smooth voting process with no significant issues. The IEC also noted a high voter turnout, with some constituencies reaching over 90 percent voter attendance.
