Botswana withdraws from hosting UN conference on landlocked developing countries

GABORONE, Nov. 16– Botswana said Thursday that it has withdrawn from hosting the third United Nations conference on landlocked developing countries. The Ministry of International Relations said Botswana will no longer host the conference that was scheduled for Dec. 10-13 in Gaborone, the capital. Botswana had agreed to host the UN conference after the initial host, Rwanda, withdrew earlier this year, citing logistical challenges. President Duma Boko, who was elected in October, said Botswana will cut excessive spending to build up the country’s financial reserves. The UN has yet to comment on the latest development regarding the conference, themed “Driving progress through partnerships.”
