Angolan president announces to invest in new satellite

LUANDA, Oct. 30 — Angola will increase investment in the telecommunications sector, which includes plans to launch a new Earth observation satellite and expand the national fiber optic network, as part of the country’s broader modernization and digital inclusion strategy. Angolan President Joao Lourenco announced this at the opening of the Luanda Financing Summit for Africa’s Infrastructure Development held in the capital, Luanda, on Tuesday. Lourenco said the Angolan government is dedicated to ensuring equitable access to digital technologies and utilizing technological innovation for national development. “In telecommunications, we are investing in another Earth observation satellite and expanding the national fiber optic network throughout the country to make digital solutions and technological innovation available to all Angolans,” Lourenco said. Angola launched its first national telecommunications satellite, Angosat-2, in October 2022. It provides coverage throughout Angola and much of Africa, improving access to the internet, broadcasting services, and data communication. The Angolan government said it is investing in key information and communication technology projects, which are considered strategic pillars for economic diversification and regional integration, in alignment with the African Union’s Agenda 2063.
