Angola, Malawi, Lesotho sign SADC labor protocol

LUANDA, March 28 — Angola, Malawi, and Lesotho have signed the Protocol on Employment and Labor of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and are in the process of ratifying it. This development was announced at a meeting Wednesday of SADC Ministers of Employment and Labor and Social Partners in Angola’s central province of Huila. Elias Magosi, the SADC executive secretary, said it was “encouraging” to see the three countries taking the lead in this matter and urged other members to sign and ratify the document so that it can “enter into force as soon as possible and benefit citizens.” He emphasized the importance of these protocols and agreements at a regional level, saying that they play a crucial role in advancing the integration agenda set by SADC members. Addressing the pressing issue of unemployment and underemployment in the region, Magosi called for stability in the labor market to facilitate social and economic development.

The SADC Protocol on Employment and Labor, introduced in 2014, seeks to harmonize labor practices and improve working conditions across the member states. Botswana, Mozambique, South Africa, and Eswatini have already signed and ratified the protocol. The 16-member SADC groups Angola, Botswana, Comoros, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eswatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
