DAR ES SALAAM, April 11 — Angola has expressed its support for Mohamed Janabi, Tanzania’s candidate for the position of World Health Organization (WHO) regional director for Africa, Tanzania’s presidency said Tuesday. Janabi, a renowned Tanzanian cardiologist, is vying for the post after the passing of the former WHO Africa Regional Director-elect Faustine Ndugulile, who died in November 2024, three months after his election to the role. Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, currently on an official visit to Angola, thanked the Angolan government led by President Joao Lourenco for its decision to back Janabi.
On March 15, the WHO announced the list of candidates for the election of the next Africa regional director, which includes Janabi. A statement from the WHO noted that other candidates are from Cote d’Ivoire, Guinea, Niger, and Togo. According to WHO, an in-person special session of the regional committee for Africa will be held on May 18, in Geneva, Switzerland, to nominate the next Africa regional director. The WHO Executive Board will then appoint the regional director following the nomination by the WHO Regional Committee for Africa.
