Rwanda welcomes over 300 refugees from DR Congo

KIGALI, May 18 — At least 360 Rwandan refugees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) were repatriated on Saturday. In a statement, the Rwandan Ministry in charge of Emergency Management said the returnees are among more than 2,500 Rwandan nationals who have been living in the eastern DRC for years and whose return has always been thwarted by Rwandan rebels of the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda. The returnees, mostly children and women, were received by local authorities at the main border post in Rubavu District. “They will be temporarily hosted at Kijote and Nyarushishi Transit Centers, where they will receive support before reintegration into national development programs. Rwanda remains committed to ensuring all its citizens return home in safety and dignity,” the statement said. The ministry said more refugees are expected to return home on separate occasions.
