GABORONE, Oct. 5 — Botswana on Wednesday inaugurated the Moshupa Sanitation Scheme, a new wastewater treatment plant in Moshupa village, Southern District, aimed at enhancing public health and sanitation services. This facility features an extensive network of over 360 km of sewer lines and integrates a 6.3-million-liter water treatment system, 10 pump stations, and a 4.7 km access road. At the launch, President Mokgweetsi Masisi emphasized the project’s role in fulfilling his administration’s 2019 commitment to providing adequate clean water and equitable sanitation services across Botswana. He encouraged local communities to make efficient use of the facility, noting that treated water could significantly boost agricultural production. Additionally, Masisi announced plans for similar sanitation projects in other major villages as part of National Development Plan 12. Botswana has significantly increased its focus on water resources, doubling the development budget for water and sanitation projects to 32 percent over the past two fiscal years, with 92 percent of the population now having access to basic water and sanitation facilities.
