Namibia condemns Israeli airstrikes on Gaza school

WINDHOEK, Aug. 13 — Namibia has condemned as “barbaric” Israel’s recent airstrikes targeting a Gaza school where displaced Palestinians were sheltering. In a statement issued on Monday, Penda Naanda, executive director of the Namibian Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation, described the attack on Taba’een School in the Al-Daraj neighborhood on Saturday as a “barbaric act”. He called on the United Nations (UN) Security Council to take immediate action to end the violence against Palestinians, ensure the protection of civilians in Gaza and hold those responsible for the attack accountable. “We call for appropriate measures to be taken against those responsible for these atrocities and for them to be brought to justice to deter and prevent further crimes,” he added. Israeli warplanes targeted the school in central Gaza City on Saturday while the displaced there were performing the Fajr prayer, killing at least 100 Palestinians and injuring dozens more, Palestinian medical and security sources said, adding that the victims included women and children. The Israel Defense Forces said in a statement that the school compound served as a Hamas and Islamic Jihad military facility, with about 20 Hamas and Islamic Jihad militants operating there, including senior commanders.
