KAMPALA, April 2 — At least 45 people lost their lives and 125 others sustained injuries in road accidents during the Easter holiday in Uganda, a police spokesperson said Tuesday. Michael Kananura, the traffic police spokesperson, told reporters that between March 28 and April 1, 72 percent of fatalities were motorcycle riders, their passengers and pedestrians. “A total of 22 motorcyclists were killed, along with 10 pedestrians and five motorcycle passengers. The remaining eight fatalities were passengers in vehicles and drivers,” Kananura said. Most of the fatal road crashes occurred in Kampala Metropolitan, which comprises Kampala, the capital of Uganda, and the central districts of Wakiso and Mukono. Kananura urged drivers to avoid overloading, speeding and reckless driving, which are major causes of road accidents in the East African country. According to police statistics, Uganda records about 20,000 road accidents nationwide each year, resulting in more than 2,000 deaths.
