LISBON, July 11– The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) announced on Friday that Jorge Jesus has been appointed head coach of the men’s national team, replacing Roberto Martinez.
According to the FPF, the 71-year-old will lead Portugal in the upcoming UEFA Nations League, the 2028 UEFA European Championship and the 2030 FIFA World Cup. The Portuguese has nearly four decades of coaching experience, having managed clubs including Benfica, Sporting CP, Flamengo, Fenerbahce and Al-Hilal. He has won numerous trophies in Portugal, Brazil and Saudi Arabia. The appointment marks his first job in charge of a national team. His most recent role was with Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr, where he worked with Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo. Portugal endured a disappointing World Cup campaign, advancing from the group stage as runner-up before suffering a 1-0 defeat to Spain in the round of 16. The FPF announced on Wednesday that it had parted company with Spaniard Martinez.
Following Portugal’s elimination, speculation has grown over whether Ronaldo, 41, will continue playing for the national team. He has confirmed that this was his final World Cup but has yet to announce his retirement from international football. Ronaldo is Portugal’s all-time leading scorer with 146 goals.
