Windhoek, May 29—Namibia Youth delegation recently visited Jiangxi province and Shanghai in China from 17-23 May 2026 as part of a cultural and educational exchange programme aimed at strengthening people-to-people relations between Namibia and China.
During the visit, the delegation toured the cities of Nanchang and Wuyuan and met Chinese companies involved in major infrastructure projects in Namibia, including the Dr. Hage Geingob Freeway and the Swakopmund desalination pipeline project.
Nanchang visit
The Nanchang visit highlighted a blend of cultural enrichment and economic engagement. The delegation explored significant historical sites, including the Tengwang Pavilion, which provided insights into China’s rich heritage, and the August 1st Nanchang Uprising Memorial Museum, a tribute to pivotal moments in Chinese history. Additionally, they visited the Wanshou Palace Historical and Cultural Block, further immersing themselves in the local culture.
Business front
On the business front, the delegation engaged with key Chinese companies, such as China Jiangxi International Economic and Technical Cooperation Company Ltd (CJIC), and Zhong Mei Engineering Group Ltd which operate in Namibia were discussions centered around potential cooperation in various sectors. Mr. Li Biya, the Deputy Manager, of China Jiangxi International Economic and Technical Cooperation Company Ltd (CJIC) emphasized the importance of bridging the gap between AI and the youth, encouraging the Namibian youth to embrace technological advancements and seize opportunities in the AI sector.

Zhong Mei Engineering Group Ltd welcomes the Namibian Youth to its Headquarters in Nanchang, Jiangxi province
During the recent visit of the Namibian Youth Delegation to Zhong Mei Engineering Group Ltd Headquarters in Nanchang on Tuesday 19 May 2026,the African Youth Newspaper had the opportunity to meet up with Mr. Jinsheng, the project manager for the construction of the TR9/1 dual carriageway from Windhoek to Hosea Kutako International Airport. This project, a significant milestone in Namibia’s infrastructure development, was signed during the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in September 2018. It forms part of the broader “Belt and Road Initiative” and is a key component of Namibia’s “Unity and Prosperity Plan.”
Overview of the TR9/1 Project
The dual carriageway spans 21.3 kilometers and is designed to meet the highest standards of Class A expressways in Namibia. Construction began on September 30, 2021, and was completed on September 2, 2025. Mr. Jinsheng said “The project faced numerous challenges, including drought conditions, water scarcity, and a limited supply of construction materials. However, the joint efforts of Chinese and Namibian teams, driven by the motto “quality first and safety paramount,” ensured its successful completion.”
The TR9/1 Project ‘s Impact on Namibia
The opening ceremony on November 10, 2025, attended by Namibia’s Minister of Works and Transport Veikko Nekundi and Chinese Ambassador Zhao Weiping, marked a new era in Namibian transport infrastructure. The dual carriageway has eliminated congestion between Windhoek and the International airport, significantly reduced travel time, and lowered logistics costs. It has also enhanced road safety and boosted Hosea Kutako International Airport’s capacity to attract tourists, thus promoting trade, tourism, and industrial growth in Namibia.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
Beyond its practical benefits, the TR9/1 project symbolizes the enduring friendship between China and Namibia. The construction phase saw Chinese and Namibian workers collaborating closely, with the Chinese side also providing training to local technicians. This knowledge transfer has enhanced Namibia’s infrastructure capabilities and solidified the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two nations. The project stands as a testament to the success of the “Belt and Road Initiative” in Africa and contributes to the China-Africa Community of Shared Future.
Under the management of Zhong Mei Engineering Group and with Mr.Tu Jinsheng at the helm, the TR9/1 project not only advances Namibia’s infrastructure landscape but also strengthens the bonds between China and Namibia. As this crucial transport corridor begins operation, it lays the groundwork for future collaborative endeavors and economic prosperity in the region.
Swakopmund Pipelines desalination project
During our visit to Zhong Mei Engineering Group ‘s headquarters in Nanchang city the African Youth Newspaper also sat down with with Mr. Li Chuang, the Chief Engineer overseeing the significant infrastructure project of the Construction of the Omdel-Swakopmund Pipeline Replacement and Ancillary Works for the Central Namib Area Water Supply Scheme. This project, commissioned by the Namibia Water Corporation Ltd., a very critical component of the region’s water supply system. The project entails the installation of 1.2-meter diameter ductile iron pipes over a span of 25.8 kilometers.
These pipes are strategically placed on above-ground piers, which total over 3,200. Additionally, the project includes the construction of more than 90 inspection chambers. The total volume of concrete required for these constructions is approximately 9,500 cubic meters, all of which must meet the Grade C35 standard. As the Chief Engineer, Mr. Li Chuang said “he responsible for ensuring the successful implementation of this crucial infrastructure, which promises to enhance the water supply system in the Central Namib Area.” His expertise and leadership are instrumental in navigating the challenges of such a large-scale construction endeavor.
Journey to Huangling Scenic Area
After their enriching visit to Jingdezhen, a city renowned for its exquisite porcelain, the Namibian Youth delegation embarked on the next leg of their journey to the captivating Huangling Scenic Area. Nestled in the picturesque Wuyuan County, Huangling is celebrated for its breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural heritage.
Shanghai: A Blend of History and Modernity
As the visit was nearing its end, the Namibian delegation embarked on a journey to Shanghai, one of China’s most vibrant and dynamic cities. Their trip on a fast train was a testament to the seamless integration of speed and comfort in China’s modern transportation infrastructure.
Exploring the Memorial Hall of the first National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC)
The first stop on the agenda was the Memorial Hall of the first National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC). This museum is a crucial site for understanding China’s political evolution. As the delegation walked through the exhibits, they were offered a glimpse into the founding moments of the CPC and its journey over the past century. The museum features a range of artifacts, documents, and interactive displays that narrate the story of China’s political landscape.
The visit to Shanghai left a lasting impression on the Namibian delegation. The city, with its vibrant energy and rich history, provided an enlightening experience that highlighted China’s rapid development and cultural depth. As they prepared to leave, the delegation carried with them not only memories of towering skyscrapers and historical insights but also a deeper appreciation for Shanghai’s unique role on the world stage.
Namibian Youth Delegation Impressions of Jiangxi and Shanghai visits
Jiangxi, a province known for its rich cultural heritage and natural beauty, left a lasting impression on the Namibian Youth Delegation. One member of the delegation, Mr. Joel Haikali, an entrepreneur noted, “The hospitality we received in Jiangxi and Shanghai was exceptional. It was remarkable experience to witness the blend of tradition and modernity in these regions.”
Jiangxi and Shanghai visit are set to pave the way for joint ventures and exchanges in education, technology and trade. As one delegate Ms. Faith Hawaes remarked, “our visit has laid the foundation for a stronger partnership between Namibia and China, one that promises to benefit both nations.”
The visit has undoubtedly set the stage for future engagements, encouraging cultural understanding and economic collaboration between Namibia and these vibrant Chinese regions.
