Zimbabwean president urges mining investors to abide by laws

HARARE, Oct. 28 — Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Tuesday warned mining investors who cause environmental degradation and other societal ills that the government will deal severely with them under proposed laws. Delivering his address at the official opening of the third session of the 10th parliament, Mnangagwa stressed that investors were expected to follow the laws of the country. “The Mines and Minerals Amendment Bill have been gazetted and is expected to be finalized during the current session of parliament,” he said. “My government is committed to weeding out irresponsible mining stakeholders who cause pollution, degradation of the environment, and damage to critical infrastructure.” According to the Zimbabwean president, commissioning new plants, independent power-generating units, and energy parks, among others, is ensuring that all sectors achieve targets regarding value addition, beneficiation, job creation, and growth of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). “As we welcome investors in our jurisdiction, we expect that they will adhere to the constitution and laws of our country, while also respecting our people, customs, and culture,” he added. With large reserves of gold, lithium, and other minerals, Zimbabwe has seen increased investment in the mining sector over the years, contributing significantly to its GDP.
