Namibia Embraces Digital Innovation with Official Launch of MTC eSIM Technology

On 19 September 2025, Namibia took a significant step forward in its digital transformation journey with the official launch of MTC’s eSIM technology at Droombos, Windhoek. The keynote address by Hon. Emma Theofelus, Minister of Information and Communication Technology, underscored the importance of this milestone for the nation’s connectivity landscape.

Minister Theofelus described the introduction of eSIM technology as much more than a technical upgrade; it represents progress, convenience, and a vital component of Namibia’s broader digital agenda. By replacing physical SIM cards with embedded SIMs that allow remote activation and network switching, this technology enhances user flexibility and ease, which is essential in today’s interconnected world.

This initiative will benefit various sectors, including education, healthcare, commerce, and government services, by enabling universal, secure, and seamless connectivity. The Minister highlighted that eSIM technology reduces environmental impact by minimizing plastic waste and provides tourists and business travelers with instant access to local networks, thus supporting economic growth.

The rollout of eSIM will also accelerate digital inclusion and foster innovation in critical areas such as smart agriculture, Internet of Things (IoT), mobile banking, e-commerce, and smart health solutions. However, Minister Theofelus acknowledged challenges such as device compatibility, limited consumer awareness, and the need for robust regulatory frameworks to support data protection and remote provisioning. She called on digital service providers to prioritize customer education to ensure no citizen is left behind.

Additionally, eSIM technology plays a key role in enhancing national security by providing stronger protection against physical theft and unauthorized use compared to traditional SIM cards. Its embedded nature and remote management capabilities make it ideal for securing mobile banking, government services, and IoT devices critical to national infrastructure.

Minister Theofelus commended all stakeholders—telecom operators, regulators, and innovators—for their dedication in making this advancement a reality. The Government remains committed to fostering a technology-driven Namibia that promotes growth, inclusivity, and resilience.

The official launch of MTC’s eSIM technology marks a pivotal moment in Namibia’s digital evolution, offering citizens greater convenience, strengthening national security, and positioning the country competitively on the global digital stage.

Namibia continues to stand proud as a nation of innovation and opportunity, committed to leveraging technology for the wellbeing and advancement of its people.
