Unity and Progress: Zimbabwe’s President Mnangagwa Rallies SADC for a New Era

HARARE, 17 August 2025 — Southern Africa celebrated SADC Day today, with Zimbabwean President Emmerson D. Mnangagwa, the current SADC Chairperson, issuing a powerful statement aimed at inspiring renewed unity, peace, and collaboration among member states.

Speaking to Heads of State and millions of SADC citizens, President Mnangagwa emphasized that SADC Day marks “the beginning of a new era” for the region one defined by solidarity, integration, and shared prosperity.

He highlighted achievements made over the past year, noting that despite challenges, joint actions and regional cooperation have remained the backbone of the community. “This is the hallmark of our community,” Mnangagwa affirmed.

Referring to the 44th SADC Summit theme, Mnangagwa urged all nations to accelerate industrialization by prioritizing the value addition and beneficiation of natural resources. He stressed the importance of increased intra-regional trade, harnessing the energy of youth, women, and skilled professionals to drive sustainable development.

“Innovation and entrepreneurship must be encouraged,” he said, underlining the need for education systems tailored to the region’s unique resources and cultures, ensuring SADC is ready for the future.

Mnangagwa also called for the integration of the SADC Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan (RISDP) and Agenda 2063 into domestic agendas, championing cross-border projects in energy, ICT, and transport. He celebrated ongoing infrastructure efforts, such as those under PIDA and RIDMP, designed to connect nations and drive industrial growth.

Energy access featured prominently, with the region’s goal of universal access by 2040 pushing renewable sources to the forefront. “Leveraging our vast solar and wind potential, we can power our industries and lead the way to a greener future,” Mnangagwa stated.

On peace and security, the President praised SADC’s progress in building stability, attracting investment, and resolving conflicts, such as the joint approach with the East African Community in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Closing his statement, Mnangagwa reflected on SADC’s journey: “Let us remain emboldened by our unity, solidarity, and unwavering dedication to our shared vision. No country in our region must be left behind.”

He rallied all SADC citizens to recommit to the founding ideals, declaring, “The SADC we want shall be built by its people.” As the region celebrates SADC Day, the echoes of unity and solidarity ring louder than ever.
