KAMPALA, July 8– Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni received the Webb Ellis Rugby World Cup trophy in the capital Kampala on Sunday, ahead of its scheduled tour. Museveni thanked the global rugby governing body for including Uganda in the trophy’s journey and praised the sport as a powerful vehicle for unity, fitness, and social transformation. “Rugby, unlike some other sports, is particularly effective in instilling national discipline and cooperation,” Museveni noted. Uganda is set to host the 2025 Rugby Africa Cup, which also serves as a qualifying tournament for the Rugby World Cup. The competition will run from July 8 to 18, featuring eight teams, including the host nation and defending champions Zimbabwe. Speaking during the meeting at State House, Rugby Africa President Herbert Mensah highlighted Uganda‘s infrastructure and stability as key reasons for choosing the country to host the qualifier. Jonathan Webb, vice-chair of World Rugby, also commended Uganda‘s hospitality and dedication to sports development. “This is my first time in Uganda and its rugby that brought me here. The structure, the passion, the cohesion we see here speaks volumes,” he said.
