MAPUTO, Nov. 19 — A group of Islamist terrorists killed at least four people in the Mazua administrative post of Memba District, in the northern Mozambican province of Nampula, Mozambican state news agency AIM reported on Tuesday. The attack occurred over the weekend, marking an episode of extreme violence in the communities of the district and giving an indication that the terrorists are on the move. According to Manuel Cintura, administrator of Memba District, the Mozambican Defense and Security Forces have been deployed to the region to provide protection and respond to any further threat. According to AIM, the last attack against Nampula Province was carried out on Sept. 30 and Oct. 3, when the terrorists raided the administrative posts of Lurio and Chipene. Since 2017, violent extremist attacks have been taking place in the neighboring Cabo Delgado Province, where at least 4,500 people have been killed and over one million displaced. In 2024 alone, at least 349 people died in attacks in northern Mozambique, most claimed by the extremist group Islamic State, reported the state news agency.
