COMMUNITY OF OKOMUMBONDE THWARTS NETWORK VANDALS

Windhoek, June 12–The recent incident in Okomumbonde, where residents successfully thwarted network vandals, highlights the significant role communities can play in safeguarding essential infrastructure. When an MTC network site was vandalized, community members took swift action, forming a search party that tracked the suspects’ footprints for 28 kilometers, leading to the arrest of the alleged perpetrators. This commendable act of community policing not only helped protect vital telecommunications infrastructure but also underscored the importance of collective vigilance in maintaining service continuity.

Tim Ekandjo, an MTC executive, praised the residents for their proactive approach, urging other communities to follow suit in safeguarding network sites crucial for communication, emergency services, and daily activities. “In some cases, these criminal acts disrupt service delivery to entire communities. While this infrastructure belongs to MTC,
it ultimately exists to serve the public by keeping communities connected,” he said.

This incident serves as a powerful reminder of the shared responsibility in preventing theft and vandalism and ensuring that communities remain connected and secure.
