Windhoek, May 3 — The Minister of Information and Communication Technology, hon Emma Theofelus is in Santiago, Chile for the commemoration of the 31st edition of the World Press Freedom Day slated from 2-4 May 2024.The 31st edition of the World Press Freedom Day is being held under the theme: A Press for the Planet; Journalism is in the face of the Environmental Crisis”.
The Minister is expected to address the delegates and participate in various discussions while highlighting Namibia’s position on media freedom as guaranteed in the country’s constitution.
”World Freedom Day, which is observed on 3 May annually, is an important opportunity for the international community collectively reflect on multidimensional challenges, the fundamental role of journalism and transformative power of information to protect our planet, achieve sustainable development and consolidate democracies” said Frans Nghitila, Acting Executive Director of MICT.
Namibia currently enjoys the first ranking in Africa as the freest press and 22nd globally out of 180 as per the Reporters Without Borders’ 2023 Press Freedom Index.
