Namibia advertises Sandwich Harbour Concession to tackle environmental issues

WINDHOEK, May 1 — Namibia’s Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism on Wednesday announced the advertisement for a concession opportunity to manage Sandwich Harbor, one of the country’s most important coastal wetlands, in a bid to address environmental challenges and illegal activities.
According to the ministry, the decision to advertise the concession was prompted by concerns over environmental degradation and unlawful practices observed in the area which include the deterioration of ablution facilities, environmental damage caused by unauthorized vehicle tracks, and accidents involving inexperienced and reckless drivers.
The concession, aims to tackle these challenges by granting the successful bidder rights to manage entry, maintain facilities, operate shuttle services, and guide activities within Sandwich Harbour, Spokesperson of the ministry Romeo Muyunda said in a statement.
Muyunda emphasized the necessity of addressing these issues to preserve Sandwich Harbour’s appeal as a tourism destination while ensuring the safety and comfort of visitors.
The successful bidder will be tasked with maintaining clean and functional facilities to enhance the experience for all tourists, he said.
“Tourism Concessions play a critical role in the management and monitoring of the country’s natural resources as well as ensuring that our National Parks contribute to the economy of the country,” he said.
The Sandwich Harbour concession will make sure that the area remains a well-kept and preserved tourism destination like all other destinations across the country, he added.
Namibia’s Sandwich Harbour is a RAMSAR-inscribed site known for its unique coastal landscape, diverse wildlife, and importance as a stopover for migratory birds.
A RAMSAR-inscribed site refers to a wetland area designated under the Ramsar Convention, an international treaty aimed at conserving important wetlands around the world. These sites are recognized for their ecological significance and are protected to ensure their sustainable use and preservation of biodiversity.
