Van der Westhuizen confirmed as Namibia captain for crucial Rugby World Cup qualifier

WINDHOEK, Nov. 7 — The Namibia Rugby Union (NRU) announced on Wednesday that experienced hooker Louis van der Westhuizen will captain the national team in the crucial upcoming Final Rugby World Cup qualifier tournament in Dubai. The tournament will run from November 8 to 18, 2025. This announcement comes as Namibia prepares for a three-match, round-robin competition against Samoa, Belgium, and Brazil, with only the winner securing the 24th and final spot at the Rugby World Cup 2027 in Australia. The NRU said that Van der Westhuizen has been an integral part of Namibian rugby for several years, contributing experience, passion, and strong leadership both on and off the field. “His commitment to the team’s values and his drive for excellence make him the ideal leader for Namibia to continue its journey on the international stage,” the NRU added. The director of Namibia Rugby Jacques Burger expressed full confidence in the appointment and noted that Van der Westhuizen embodies the resilience and determination that define Namibian rugby. “The team is united and ready to represent the country with pride, as they aim to secure qualification and make the nation proud,” he concluded.
