Her Excellency Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, President of the Republic of Namibia, delivered a heartfelt statement at the memorial service of the late Mr. John Savva at the Jan Wilken Indoor Complex in Walvis Bay, Erongo Region, on 17 October 2025.
The President expressed deep condolences to the Savva family and the wider Walvis Bay community, recognizing John Savva as an eminent businessman, comrade, and friend. The service was attended by prominent figures including former President Dr. Nangolo Mbumba, Prime Minister Elija Ngurare, government ministers, parliament members, regional governors, diplomats, business leaders, media, and fellow mourners.
John Savva’s journey to Namibia was marked by courage, ambition, and a dream shaped under the Mediterranean sun of his homeland. His aspiration was humble yet profound to build a life of shared prosperity with Namibians. Rooted in integrity, humility, and compassion, Savva overcame early challenges through hard work and faith, growing into one of Namibia’s most respected business visionaries.
President Nandi-Ndaitwah highlighted Savva’s belief that character surpasses wealth, and that generosity is an expression of conviction rather than charity. Known for his discreet kindness, he treated those who sought his help with dignity and respect, teaching a powerful lesson in humility to all.
Savva’s entrepreneurial achievements spanned various sectors, with a particularly strong footprint in tourism. His 25-year leadership in the Namibia Chamber of Commerce and Industry, including 20 years as President, cemented his influence on the Walvis Bay business community. The President noted that Savva’s legacy is deeply intertwined with the town’s economic and social fabric, shaping Walvis Bay into the vibrant hub it is today.
Dedication to youth empowerment was another hallmark of Savva’s legacy. He believed in sharing mentorship and creating opportunities, inspiring many young Namibians by recognizing their potential. His economic contributions created numerous jobs, strengthened local suppliers, and supported community initiatives across schools, churches, and social programs.
Savva’s commitment extended beyond business to diplomacy, serving nearly 25 years as Honorary Consul for Cyprus and Greece in Namibia. He fostered strong bilateral relations, embodying the spirit of family and unity that bridged his two worlds. His genuine friendships with national and global leaders, including the President herself, underscored his wide-reaching impact.
As a loyal friend of the SWAPO Party, Savva passionately supported Namibia’s independence, unity, and sovereignty. The President recalled his late son Yianni’s active involvement in SWAPO’s successful 2010 Walvis Bay campaign and Savva’s own recent efforts to help reclaim leadership in the 2025 regional elections.
President Nandi-Ndaitwah urged all to honor Savva’s dream of Walvis Bay becoming Namibia’s largest city, affirming his legacy as an economic hero whose wisdom and humility left an indelible mark on the nation.
On behalf of the Government and People of Namibia, the SWAPO Party, and personally, she extended condolences to Mrs. Roulla Savva, their children, and the bereaved family, wishing them comfort from the Almighty in their time of loss.
