Tanzania launches national NCDs week to boost public awareness

DAR ES SALAAM, Nov. 10 — Tanzania on Monday launched its annual National Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) Week, observed during the second week of November, to raise public awareness about the growing threat of lifestyle-related illnesses. The 2025 commemoration from Monday to Saturday is held under the theme “Take Action, Control Non-Communicable Diseases,” highlighting the responsibility of every individual to safeguard their health and contribute to a healthier society. According to a statement by the Ministry of Health, NCDs such as cancer, diabetes, hypertension, heart diseases, mental illnesses, kidney disorders, sickle cell disease, and some chronic respiratory diseases are on the rise both globally and locally. The ministry noted that over 34 percent of deaths in Tanzania are attributed to these conditions. The Ministry of Health has urged citizens to adopt healthier lifestyles by eating balanced, nutritious meals, exercising for at least 30 minutes daily, and avoiding tobacco and excessive alcohol consumption. The statement said the government’s campaign during the NCDs Week aims to encourage early medical check-ups, enhance public education on prevention, and promote community participation in combating the rising burden of non-communicable diseases.
