MTC and BoFiNet Ink MOU to Boost Namibia-Botswana Digital Links

Gaborone, February 18 – Namibia’s Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) and Botswana Fibre Networks (BoFiNet) signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Tuesday, paving the way for stronger cross-border digital connectivity between the two nations.

The agreement formalized in Gaborone sets up a framework for fibre interconnections capacity sharing and IP transit along the vital Buitepos Ngoma corridor. This route will build network resilience cut latency and position Namibia as a key digital gateway in Southern Africa.

Officials hailed the deal as a step toward transforming regional infrastructure easing trade, spurring industrialization and fueling socio-economic growth across the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

MTC Managing Director Dr. Licky Erastus called it a perfect fit for the company’s strategy on regional expansion and digital corridors. “This partnership guides our transformation,” she said. “The Buitepos Ngoma corridor isn’t just a connection it’s our entry into Botswana’s wholesale market reinforcing Namibia’s role as a transit hub.”

Erastus added that the collaboration fosters technical ties economic integration and mutual trust between the organizations and countries.

BoFiNet Acting CEO Keabetswe Segole stressed the need to turn words into action by slashing red tape and speeding up implementation. “We share a duty to streamline processes and activate infrastructure efficiently,” he said. “This isn’t just institutional it’s a national strategy for digital resilience and stronger bilateral ties.”

The MOU promises practical gains like faster internet services and reliable wholesale access amid growing demand for robust digital networks in the region.
