Zambia to start exporting fresh avocados to South Africa

LUSAKA, April 10 — Zambia has concluded bilateral negotiations with South Africa to allow the export of fresh avocado fruits, a senior government official said Tuesday. Minister of Agriculture Reuben Mtolo Phiri said the agreement was finalized in February, and efforts are now underway to support farmers in meeting the export requirements outlined in the signed protocol. “Through this landmark development, Zambian avocado growers can now export fresh avocado fruits into South Africa,” he said in a statement released after the launch of a partnership between the Lusaka Avocado Multipurpose Cooperative Society (LAMCS) and South African retail chain Shoprite. The government has prioritized avocados under its comprehensive agricultural transformation support program aimed at revitalizing the sector, the minister added. Bernard Chiwala, chairperson of LAMCS, said local farmers are committed to ensuring that Zambia earns its place on the global avocado map.
