HWPL Concern over unrest and Violence in Mozambique post elections

Walvisbay, Namibia-Dec 19 – -Heavenly Culture, World Peace, and Restoration of Light (HWPL) in a media statement expresses deep concern over the unrest and violence that have emerged in the aftermath of the general elections in Mozambique. ”We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of those who have tragically lost their lives during this period. Every life is invaluable, and its loss leaves an irreparable void. As an organization committed to fostering peace, we call on all stakeholders to prioritise dialogue, empathy and constructive engagement during this challenging time.”

To the People of Mozambique

We acknowledge the courage of Mozambicans in expressing their aspirations for a just and peaceful society. We urge all citizens to exercise their rights responsibly and ensure that demonstrations remain peaceful. Acts of violence or vandalism undermine the shared goal of meaningful change and dialogue. We stand in solidarity with the people of Mozambique and encourage unity, resilience, and nonviolence as the foundation for progress.

To the Government of Mozambique

We urge the government to uphold and protect the fundamental rights of its citizens, including the right to peaceful assembly and free expression. Recent reports of excessive force and violent repression are deeply troubling. We appeal to the government to:

  • Refrain from using excessive force and ensure that security forces operate within the bounds of national and international law.
  • Initiate open and inclusive dialogue with protesters to address their concerns and grievances.
  • Demonstrate commitment to justice and accountability by investigating and addressing any reported human rights violations.

Leadership rooted in compassion and respect for human dignity is essential for fostering a path toward sustainable peace and stability. We trust in the government’s longstanding commitment to peace and urge it to lead the nation through this time with integrity and care.

To Political Structures in Mozambique

Political parties and leaders hold a critical responsibility in guiding the nation through this challenging time. We call on all political actors to:

  • Promote messages of peace, unity and reconciliation.
  • Strongly discourage violence and aggression among their supporters while awaiting the Constitutional Council’s final determination of the election results.
  • Provide decisive leadership that will prioritise the rights and safety of all citizens.
  • Actively support dialogue and collaboration between all parties to de-escalate tensions and foster a peaceful resolution.

Leadership must rise above partisanship to prioritise the collective good of the nation.

Our Commitment as HWPL

As an international peace organization with a decade of experience in conflict resolution, HWPL reaffirms its dedication to supporting Mozambique in achieving a peaceful resolution. Through collaborative efforts with our partners, the International Peace Youth Group (IPYG) and International Women’s Peace Group (IWPG), we have witnessed the power of dialogue and cooperation, as demonstrated by the Mindanao Peace Agreement in the Philippines facilitated by HWPL’s guidance.

HWPL stands ready to collaborate with stakeholders to facilitate meaningful discussions and promote sustainable peace in Mozambique. HWPL calls on all stakeholders to join hands in finding a path forward that respects the rights, dignity and aspirations of all Mozambicans.

Together, let us work to build a future where peace prevails and the people of Mozambique thrive in unity and harmony.
