Namibia, World Food Program partner to boost rural development

WINDHOEK, Nov. 26– Namibia‘s Ministry of Agriculture, Water, and Land Reform (MAWLR) has partnered with the World Food Program (WFP) to establish a framework for cooperation to transform rural Namibia. The partnership, formalized through a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed Monday in Windhoek, the Namibian capital, aims to promote sustainable farming practices, empower marginalized communities, and invest in human capital development. The MOU was signed by MAWLR Executive Director Ndiyakupi Nghituwamata and WFP Acting Country Director and Representative in Namibia Tiwonge Machiwenyika. The collaboration outlined in the MOU seeks to modernize agriculture by digitizing marketing systems and subsidy distribution.

It also focuses on empowering rural communities, particularly youth and women, by providing skills training and supporting smallholder farmers to increase their productivity. Nghituwamata acknowledged WFP’s continued support to Namibia through the Country Strategic Plan 2018-2024. “WFP has been instrumental in complementing the ministry in the capacity development of our smallholder farmers by training them in good agriculture practices, planting, harvesting, irrigation techniques, and poultry production,” she said. Machiwenyika said the WFP looks forward to participating in the Namibian food and nutrition sector and providing support to working groups focusing on agricultural-related issues, livelihoods, and economic empowerment. The newly signed memorandum is expected to drive significant change to Namibia‘s rural areas, contributing to food security, poverty reduction, and sustainable development.
