JOHANNESBURG, Nov. 24 — South Africa on Thursday welcomed the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) decision to issue arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and Mohammed Deif of Hamas for crimes against humanity in Gaza. “This is a significant step toward justice for crimes against humanity and war crimes in Palestine,” said Chrispin Phiri, spokesperson for the Department of International Relations and Cooperation, in a statement. South Africa reaffirms its commitment to international law and urges all state parties to act in accordance with their obligations in the Rome Statute. “We call on the global community to uphold the rule of law and ensure accountability for human rights violations,” said Phiri. South Africa reported Israel to the International Court of Justice in 2023, requesting the court to declare Israel’s attacks on Palestine as genocide, prohibit further military action, and ensure humanitarian assistance for those in need.
