Namibia developing digital literacy framework to guide, standardize digital education

WINDHOEK, Aug. 29– Namibia is developing a Digital Literacy Framework to guide and standardize digital education across the country, Minister of Information and Communication Technology Emma Theofelus announced Wednesday. Speaking at the inaugural MTC Ongwediva Annual Trade Fair Tech Conference in northern Namibia, Theofelus emphasized the need for the framework due to challenges such as the high cost of devices, a lack of digital skills among educators, and limited access to electricity in schools. “Our journey toward a fully digital Namibia cannot succeed without a digitally literate population,” she said, urging all stakeholders to commit resources to digital literacy initiatives.

Theofelus called for practical efforts, such as teaching people how to use digital services, which could have a significant impact on Namibia‘s digital transformation. The conference, which brought together industry experts to discuss and develop innovative technology solutions, was made possible by MTC, Namibia‘s largest mobile carrier, together with other partners that include the Namibia University of Science and Technology, Chinese technology giant Huawei, and the Namibia Electronic Sports Association. “I commend MTC for its leadership in digital literacy, but we must acknowledge that more needs to be done,” she said. Theofelus also acknowledged the limitations of current government efforts, including digital literacy training conducted across the country, which has not reached all communities. “I pledge the support of our ministry staff to this cause, but we need more hands on deck,” the minister added.
