Zimbabwe beat Algeria to win Rugby Africa Cup in Kampala

KAMPALA, July 30– Zimbabwe emerged as the winners of the 2024 Rugby Africa Cup, beating Algeria 29-3 in Sunday’s final at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Kampala, Uganda. In-form Trevor Gurwe scored three tries, while Takuzwa Musingwini was also sharp with conversions. “We have worked hard to win this cup and we must celebrate because we also beat the hosts Uganda and former champions Namibia,” Zimbabwe captain Hilton Mudariki told Xinhua after the match. Algeria captain Marvyn Emmanuel Regis Youcef rued his side’s inability to play well against a strong Zimbabwe side. “They had prepared well and had an answer for everything we tried on the pitch,” said Youcef. Earlier in the day, former champions Namibia had beaten Kenya 38-27 in the tournament’s third place match. The President of Rugby Africa, Herbert Mensah, told Xinhua after the week-long tournament that it had been successful and well-organised. “I want to thank all the eight teams for coming here to play, and the government of Uganda and the Uganda Rugby Union for the good level of organisation,” added Mensah. Namibia have lifted the Rugby Africa Cup a record nine times, while SouthAfrica have won three titles. Kenya, Morocco and Zimbabwe have also lifted the cup twice, while Uganda have won the cup once.
