Namibian MTF Alumni Score Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards Nominations

‘The 11th Commandment’ and ‘Mfumukazi’ nominated in MTF category

Windhoek, May 1 — Months after their graduation from the MultiChoice Talent Factory (MTF), 2023 alumni Romeo Urikeraka and Tekla Nakale have produced films that were nominated for one of Africa’s biggest awards shows – the Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards (AMVCAs) slated for 11 May, with a live broadcast across all Africa Magic Channels on DStv and GOtv.

The alumni worked on two films, namely ‘The 11th Commandment’ and ‘Mfumukazi’ which will compete in the Best MultiChoice Talent Factory Movie category.

Romeo worked as the director of the film while Tekla took on the role as the lead writer for the film ‘Mfumukazi’.

“It was a dynamic and enriching experience, filled with moments of inspiration and collaboration. However, like any creative endeavor, it also presented its fair share of challenges,” says Romeo.

He shared that navigating the scenes, especially in a foreign language, presented as a “significant challenge that required meticulous attention to detail and effective communication”, however, he describes the process as fulfilling and truly unforgettable.

“This is such a huge milestone for us as young filmmakers!” says Tekla about the nomination.

Dr Busola Tejumola, Executive Head of Content and Channels, West Africa, MultiChoice said, “The quality of entries received was simply outstanding and the jury had their work cut out for them in shortlisting the nominees. This year’s line-up is exceptional, reflecting the diversity and creativity prevalent in African cinema and television and we can’t wait to celebrate them.”

Earlier this year, the awards organizers issued a call for entries from 15 January to 14 February 2024. Filmmakers from across Africa were invited to submit their work for potential nominations, provided their productions were publicly exhibited or broadcast between 1 December 2022 and 31 December 2023.

There have been some adjustments to this year’s performance awards, which now fall into the categories of Best Actor and Best Actress in leading or supporting roles. The awards have expanded to include 27 categories, comprising 16 non-voting, 9 audience voting categories, and two recognition awards – the Lifetime Achievement and Trailblazer Awards. The non-voting categories will be determined by the AMVCA panel of judges, led by acclaimed filmmaker Femi Odugbemi.

The voting period will close on Sunday, 28 April 2024, offering fans the chance to rally behind and recognize the exceptional talent showcased throughout the year. Cast your votes on the Africa Magic website.

The 10th instalment of the AMVCAs is presented to audiences by Africa Magic in collaboration with Amstel Malta as the primary sponsor. Additional sponsors include Pepsi, Promasidor, and Martell, alongside Tecno, Verve, QuickTeller, Tiger Beer, MTN, and Indomie.
