ACCRA, March 18– Ghana’s boxing sensation Samuel Takyi, the Tokyo Olympic bronze medalist, started his 13th African Games campaign with an easy win at the Bukom Boxing Arena here on Sunday. Takyi, who turned 23 last December, beat Berchami Mehdi from Morocco, in the first round of the light welterweight bout.
Takyi knocked down his opponent three times, leaving the referee with no other option than to halt the fight. As of Sunday, Egypt still leads the medals table of the Accra 2023 Games with 90 gold medals, followed by Nigeria and South Africa. Host nation Ghana climbed to sixth place with nine golds.
