Zambia sees slight increase in crimes in 2023

LUSAKA, Feb. 26 – Zambia recorded a slight increase in crimes in 2023 compared to the previous year, according to figures released by the police on Monday. According to crime figures, the country recorded 78,193 cases in 2023 compared to 76,422 in 2022. Rae Hamoonga, the police spokesperson, said out of the 78,193 cases recorded, 838 were murder cases compared to 881 murder cases recorded the previous year, while 232 were rape cases. He said in a statement that a total of 339 motor vehicles were stolen during the year compared to 571 recorded in 2022, while 2,061 stock thefts were recorded compared to 2,330 recorded in 2022. The police spokesperson further said a total of 1,172 defilement cases were recorded in 2023 compared to 1,177 recorded in 2022.
