South Africa’s electoral body says ready for 2024 elections

JOHANNESBURG, Feb. 26 — The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) of South Africa, the country’s electoral body, said Monday that it stands ready to fulfill its tasks and ensure that it meets its constitutional duties pertaining to the 2024 general elections. The 2024 elections will introduce novel experiences for voters, such as the participation of independent candidates for the very first time, said IEC’s Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo at a press briefing. All independent candidates and political parties intending to contest the elections must submit nomination requirements by 5 p.m. on March 8, Mamabolo said. The provisional lists of candidates will be published for inspection on March 26 and 27, the IEC said. With all compliance matters and objections relating to candidates resolved, the IEC will publish the final lists of candidates on April 10, and certificates of candidature will be issued to certified candidates on April 12. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa recently determined May 29 as the date for this year’s national and provincial elections.
