Madagascar food poisoning cases rise to 274

ANTANANARIVO, Oct. 12– The number of people affected by food poisoning at a company in Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar, has risen to 274, with no deaths reported so far, the Malagasy Ministry of Public Health said Saturday.

According to the ministry, laboratory tests on samples collected from the affected individuals confirmed a collective foodborne illness outbreak. The ministry also said that employees of the company working at other sites had been affected after reportedly consuming the same meals provided by the company’s shared canteen service, which was suspected to be the source of the food poisoning. At least 183 employees of the company were admitted to hospital on Thursday after experiencing similar symptoms consistent with food poisoning. Samples were collected from the affected individuals and sent for laboratory analysis to determine the cause of the outbreak.
