CAIRO, Oct. 2 — Egypt has declared a counsellor at the Ethiopian embassy in Cairo persona non grata and given the diplomat 48 hours to leave the country, the state-run Middle East News Agency reported on Thursday.
The report quoted an official source as saying that Egypt’s action was taken in application of the principle of reciprocity after the Ethiopian government had earlier declared a member of the Egyptian embassy in Addis Ababa persona non grata. The source described Ethiopia’s move as regrettable and unjustified, according to the report.
The source added that Egypt had repeatedly affirmed its total rejection of interference in the internal affairs of other countries and its policy of refraining from commenting on events in other countries, including Ethiopia, out of respect for international law and the UN Charter.
